Real Fruit Jellies - Allergen Free

Updated: Nov 20, 2023

One of the most delightful foods there ever was for children, these homemade, real fruit jellies are a fun way to get nutrients into kids without any of the Top 9 Food Allergens OR sugar.

A pink plate with colourful, animal shaped real fruit jellies on it. Next to the plate is a jug of orange juice and some apples and limes.

This recipe is really fun to make with the kids, especially if you have a juicer and can make your own fruit and vegetable juice. If you don't, a good old fashioned lemon squeezer and some store-bought juice also work perfectly.

You and your little ones will have a great time trying out all the different combinations of flavours you can come up with - and you don't need fancy moulds either. An old ice cream container or casserole dish is fine too! A square piece of jelly/jello is still magical!

These jellies are so good for the gut too!

Tips Avoid fresh juice from kiwifruit, pineapple and papaya as these fruits have enzymes that prevent the gelatine setting. However, you can use store-bought juice from these fruits, or canned fruit in the juicer and this works fine.

Real Fruit Jellies - Allergen Free

Ingredients

  • 500ml fruit and/or vegetable juice (strained if it has pips or seeds)

  • 2 Tbsp gelatine

  • 2 Tbsp water

  • 2 Tbsp honey (or if baby is under 1 year then pure maple or date syrup)

Directions

  1. Add gelatine and water to a small bowl, mix well and leave to ‘bloom’ for a couple of minutes. It will congeal in the bowl.

  2. In the mean time, add the freshly squeezed juice to a pot and add honey or maple syrup and warm over a low heat until it’s nearly boiling.

  3. Take off the heat and add the gelatine mix, stirring well until it’s completely dissolved.

  4. Pour into moulds, or into a dish or empty ice cream container. Leave this on the kitchen bench until it cools, then transfer to the fridge to set.

  5. Once it’s set, remove jellies from the moulds, or slice into squares.

Note: If the jelly hasn’t set properly, empty it all back into a pot and pop it back on the stove until it melts down to a liquid again and then repeat the steps to add more gelatine.
